Android 16 keeps desktop mode in Developer Options rather than a standard settings menu — the same place it has been since Android 10. Functional, but not a finished product. Here is how to enable it and what to expect.

How to Enable Native Desktop Mode

  1. Go to Settings → About phone and tap Build number seven times to unlock Developer Options.
  2. Go to Settings → System → Developer Options.
  3. Scroll to Desktop mode and toggle it on.
  4. Connect your phone to an external display via a USB-C to HDMI adapter or hub.

The display shows a windowed interface with a taskbar. Apps open in resizable windows on the external display while the phone screen stays active as a touchpad.

What Android 16 Desktop Mode Gives You

  • Resizable app windows
  • Basic taskbar with app launcher
  • Mouse and keyboard support
  • Phone screen as secondary touchpad
  • Screen-off while in desktop mode (added in Android 14, carried forward)

What it doesn’t give you: a dedicated file manager, consistent multi-window behavior across all apps, or wireless output.

When to Use Samsung DeX Instead

If you own a Galaxy S8 or later, Galaxy Z Fold series, or compatible Galaxy Tab, DeX gives you a complete desktop environment without enabling Developer Options. Full file manager, up to 20 apps simultaneously, wireless DeX to Samsung Smart TVs on S21 and later.
