To use desktop mode on Android 16, you turn on the desktop experience features in Developer Options and connect your phone to an external display over USB-C. Google made connected-display support generally available with Android 16 QPR3 in March 2026, but it still works only on supported phones, and the setup is hidden in a developer menu.

What you need

  • A supported Pixel or Samsung Galaxy phone on a recent Android 16 update. Google announced connected-display support as generally available with Android 16 QPR3 on supported Pixel and Samsung devices.
  • A USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode. A hub cannot add video output if the phone’s port doesn’t support it. Plugable’s guide notes that DisplayLink-based docks aren’t supported for Android desktop mode.
  • A USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter, or a compatible hub, plus a monitor or TV.
  • Optional: a mouse and keyboard.

How to enable desktop mode

  1. Go to Settings → About phone and tap Build number seven times to unlock Developer Options.
  2. Go to Settings → System → Developer options.
  3. Turn on Enable desktop experience features. Restart the phone if it asks.
  4. Connect the phone to your external display.

When a supported phone is connected to an external display, a desktop session starts on that display. Plugable’s setup guide also lists two developer options, Force activities to be resizable and Enable non-resizable in multi-window, which help with apps that don’t resize well.

What you get

  • Resizable app windows on the external display
  • A taskbar with pinned apps and an app drawer
  • Window snapping to the left or right side of the screen
  • Mouse and keyboard support
  • The phone stays usable on its own while the desktop session runs

Limits to expect

  • It only works on supported devices, and the support list depends on your phone and software update.
  • Apps that aren’t built for resizable windows may look cramped or refuse to resize.
  • The feature is still evolving. Plugable’s guide says behavior may change in later Android updates.

If nothing shows on the display

  1. Confirm your phone’s USB-C port supports video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode).
  2. Try a different cable or a hub that isn’t DisplayLink-based.
  3. Check that Enable desktop experience features is on, and update Android.
  4. Restart the phone with the display connected.

When to use Samsung DeX instead

If you have a Galaxy phone or tablet that supports DeX, DeX is the more mature desktop mode. It runs up to 20 apps at once by default and doesn’t require unlocking Developer Options. Google and Samsung have worked together on Android’s desktop windowing, so the two are becoming more alike, but DeX has had years of refinement.

Takeaway

If you have a supported Pixel or Galaxy phone and a USB-C video adapter, enabling desktop mode takes about two minutes. If you’re on a Galaxy device, try DeX first, since it works without developer settings.
