The Galaxy S26 Ultra has two telephoto lenses and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has one. That is the biggest camera difference between them, and it runs against the idea that the foldable is the one with extra zoom hardware. The S26 Ultra went on sale March 11, 2026. The Fold 8 Ultra followed on August 7. Both use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, according to Three UK’s Fold 8 Ultra listing and Gizmochina’s S26 Ultra report.

Fold 8 Ultra figures come from Three UK’s comparison page, which reproduces Samsung’s spec list, and from Samsung’s Fold 8 page. S26 Ultra figures come from Samsung’s S26 Ultra listing, apart from the 100x figure and screen size, which come from Gizmochina’s launch report.

Main camera: wider lens on the S26 Ultra

Both phones use a 200MP main camera, but the S26 Ultra’s lens is f/1.4 against the Fold 8 Ultra’s f/1.7. Samsung’s S26 Ultra page credits the wider aperture with a 47% brightness improvement on the 200MP camera, measured against the previous Ultra rather than the Fold. The ratio of the two f-numbers squared gives a similar figure, about 1.5 times the light through the lens. That is an aperture-only calculation. It ignores sensor size, which Samsung’s pages do not publish for either phone, and image processing.

Telephoto: the S26 Ultra has more

The Fold 8 Ultra has a 10MP 3x telephoto and nothing longer. Past 3x it relies on digital zoom, which Samsung lists as up to 30x. The S26 Ultra adds a 50MP 5x periscope lens, and Samsung labels 5x as optical zoom and 10x as optical quality zoom from that lens. If you regularly shoot at distance, this is the spec that separates them.

Selfies: different tradeoffs

The Fold 8 Ultra has a 10MP selfie camera on each screen, both f/2.2. The S26 Ultra has one 12MP f/2.2 camera. Samsung’s Fold 8 page says the Fold 8 line’s inner screen camera has a 100-degree field of view for group selfies. That figure is given for the standard Fold 8. Whether the Ultra’s inner camera matches it was not confirmed for this article.

What the Fold 8 Ultra adds

The advantage is the form factor, not the lenses. The Fold 8 Ultra has an 8.0-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch cover screen. HotHardware says Flex Mode, the half-open stance that puts the viewfinder on the top half and controls on the bottom, carries over to the Fold 8 Ultra. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 does not have it, per Samsung. Nothing in these specs gives the foldable a camera edge over the S26 Ultra.

Which one fits

Choose the S26 Ultra if photo quality is the priority. It has the wider main lens, the extra 5x periscope and a longer optical zoom range.

Choose the Fold 8 Ultra if you want a big inner screen and Flex Mode and can live with a 3x optical limit. On paper the camera tradeoff against the S26 Ultra is the zoom range and the f/1.4 versus f/1.7 aperture.
