Pixel Voice Typing is Google’s on-device speech-to-text system built into Gboard on Pixel phones. It converts spoken words to text in real time, handles punctuation automatically, and supports voice commands for editing — all without sending audio to Google’s servers for most languages and tasks.

How It Works

Voice Typing runs on Tensor chips using Google’s on-device speech recognition models. Processing happens locally, which means it works without an internet connection for common languages and keeps spoken words off Google’s servers during transcription.

The system uses machine learning trained on large speech datasets to handle different accents, speech patterns, and vocabulary. Each Tensor generation has run an updated model — Tensor G6 on the Pixel 11 handles background noise and mixed accents better than Tensor G5 on the Pixel 10.

How to Enable Voice Typing

If the microphone icon isn’t visible on your Gboard keyboard:

  1. Settings → System → Languages & input → On-screen keyboard → Gboard
  2. Tap Voice typing → toggle Use Voice typing on

To use it: open any text field, tap the microphone icon on Gboard, and start speaking. The transcription appears as you talk.

Automatic Punctuation

Voice Typing places commas, periods, and question marks based on natural pauses and intonation — you don’t need to say “comma” or “period.” The system uses context to distinguish between a breath mid-sentence and the end of a thought.

This works well for conversational speech and standard prose. Technical dictation with specific formatting may still require manual punctuation for edge cases.

Voice Commands for Editing

While Voice Typing is active, you can control text without touching the screen:

Command Action
“Delete that” Removes the last word or phrase
“Clear all” Clears the text field
“Undo” Reverts the last action
“New paragraph” Inserts a paragraph break
“Send” Sends the message (in supported apps)
“Select all” Selects all text

These commands work across Messages, Gmail, Keep, and most other apps that use Gboard.

Offline vs Online Mode

Voice Typing downloads language models to the device for offline use. To verify your language is downloaded for offline:

Gboard settings → Voice typing → Languages → select your language → tap Download

Once downloaded, transcription works without a connection. Some languages and dialects are online-only — the app will indicate this when you activate Voice Typing without internet access.

Practical Use Cases

Voice Typing is most useful for:

  • Composing messages or emails hands-free
  • Dictating notes in Google Keep while doing something else
  • Drafting longer text when typing is slow or inconvenient
  • Accessibility use cases where touch interaction is difficult

The feature works in most Gboard-enabled text fields. Some apps with custom keyboards won’t support it — switching to Gboard as the default keyboard resolves this.
