Nintendo Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards exclusively. Standard microSD and microSDXC cards — including the ones that worked in the original Switch — are not compatible. Nintendo confirmed this before launch, and it catches players off guard when they try to reuse their existing storage.


Why the Format Changed

The original Nintendo Switch used microSDXC cards, which top out at around 100 MB/s read speeds under the UHS-I bus standard. That was sufficient for Switch 1 games, which were typically 1–15GB with load times that were acceptable for the hardware.

Nintendo Switch 2 games are larger — many first-party titles exceed 20GB, and third-party ports from PS5/Xbox Series can run 50GB or more. The UHS-I bus simply cannot move data fast enough to avoid noticeable load time increases at those file sizes.

MicroSD Express uses the PCIe and NVMe protocol stack, the same technology used in fast SSDs, over the microSD form factor. The Nintendo Switch 2 implementation supports speeds up to 985 MB/s read — roughly 10x faster than what UHS-I cards can deliver.


How to Identify a MicroSD Express Card

MicroSD Express cards carry an EX logo on the card itself and packaging. Standard microSDXC cards don’t have this marking.

Current MicroSD Express cards available as of 2026:

  • Lexar PLAY microSD Express — available in 256GB and 512GB
  • ProGrade Digital microSD Express — 256GB, positioned toward content creators
  • Sandisk’s microSD Express lineup — announced for 2026, availability expanding

Prices are higher than equivalent-capacity standard microSDXC cards. A 256GB microSD Express card runs $40–60 versus $15–25 for a standard 256GB card.


How Much Storage Do You Need

Nintendo Switch 2 internal storage is 256GB. The base console ships with enough room for 8–15 large titles depending on size. If you own more than that digitally, external storage becomes necessary.

For most players, a 256GB microSD Express card doubles total storage to 512GB — enough for 20–30 large games. Players with large digital libraries, or who plan to buy primarily digitally going forward, should consider 512GB.

Physical game cards don’t require the microSD Express card to run — they load directly from the cartridge. If you primarily buy physical, the Switch 2’s internal storage may be sufficient without an expansion card.


What Happens If You Insert an Old Card

The Switch 2 will display an error indicating the card is incompatible. It won’t damage the card or the console. The old card simply won’t be read.

If you’re upgrading from Switch 1 and have games saved to a microSDXC card, those saves aren’t transferable via the card itself. Nintendo’s save data transfer tool handles Switch 1 to Switch 2 migration separately through the system’s data transfer process.
