Samsung’s 2026 Fold lineup changed the display structure and the hinge, and it made the phones thinner. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 unfolds to 4.5mm and the Fold 8 Ultra to 4.1mm. Independent teardown and bend tests from JerryRigEverything now show how those changes held up, with different results for the two models. One caveat shapes the comparison: the Fold 8 is a new, wider phone, and the Fold 8 Ultra is the direct successor to the Fold 7.

What Samsung Changed

Flex Titanium display structure. Both the Fold 8 and the Fold 8 Ultra put a titanium alloy film directly under the OLED panel, in place of a layer of plastic film, and a titanium plate beneath the display module, according to Android Authority and 9to5Google. Samsung says this layer supports the display, absorbs pressure and impact, and reduces the visibility of the crease over time. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 does not get it.

Hinge. Samsung describes the Fold 8’s Armor FlexHinge as smoother, and it widened the gap at the inner bezel so the phone opens more easily. JerryRigEverything’s teardown found the Fold 8 has three core hinge elements, where last year’s Fold 7 had four and the Flip 8 has two. The Fold 8 Ultra’s hinge parts look similar to the Fold 8’s but are not interchangeable.

Water and dust protection. Both new Folds keep an IP48 rating. The 8 means they are water resistant, but the 4 means protection only against solid objects larger than 1mm, so fine dust and sand can still enter.

How the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Held Up

  • Bend test: the Fold 8 survived the reverse-bend test, in which the phone is forced to fold backward. The screen and hinge stayed intact, and SammyGuru’s summary says the glass back popped off the body before the inner screen took any damage.
  • Sand and grit: most of the debris stayed out of the hinge, some collected near the corner magnets, and the hinge kept working. Android Authority noted a gritty “crunch” when folding with sand and gravel in the hinge, a reminder that IP48 does not mean dust-proof.
  • Cover screen and frame: Samsung says the cover glass is Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 and the frame is Armor Aluminum, per its Fold 8 page. SammyGuru’s summary of the test says the cover screen scratched at level 6 with deeper grooves at level 7, and that the frame is aluminum, not titanium.
  • Inner screen: the Flex Titanium layer does not stop scratches. The plastic surface over the OLED panel still marks easily. Notebookcheck notes Samsung offers a relatively inexpensive replacement service for that layer.

How the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra Held Up

Notebookcheck reported that the Fold 8 Ultra failed JerryRigEverything’s durability test, taking costly display damage during the bend test. It attributed that to the limits of Samsung’s current 4.1mm-thin foldables. This is the model that replaces the Fold 7, so it is the one a Fold 7 owner would most likely upgrade to.

What This Means for Buyers

  • Fold 8 vs Fold 7: the Fold 8 is sturdier than its slim body suggests, with a three-element hinge and Samsung’s new crease-reducing display structure, but it is a different form factor, not a like-for-like successor.
  • Fold 8 Ultra: the thinnest Fold yet is also the one that failed the bend test, so treat it with more care than the Fold 8.
  • No dust protection upgrade: both models stay at IP48, so a case and avoiding sandy or dusty places still matter.
  • Limits of this comparison: the sources cited here do not include a directly comparable bend-test result for the Fold 7, so the comparison here covers the new design changes rather than head-to-head test scores.
