The Steam Frame starts at $1,059 and the Meta Quest 3 costs $599.99, so the first question is whether the extra money buys something you will use. Valve lists the 256GB Steam Frame kit at $1,059 and the 1TB kit at $1,299. Each kit includes the headset, Steam Frame Controllers, a wireless adapter and Half-Life: Alyx, but not a power supply. Meta’s own store sells the Quest 3 in one configuration, 512GB, for $599.99.

How you buy each one

You cannot simply order a Steam Frame. Beebom reports that Valve opened reservations on September 14, 2026, with sign-ups open until September 17 at 10 AM Pacific, a randomized queue, and purchase emails from September 18 that give you 72 hours to check out. The Quest 3 is on sale directly from Meta.

Valve says any USB-C charger of 45W or higher works with the Frame, and that a Steam Deck charger works too, so budget for one if you do not own it.

PC streaming

The Frame’s headset has Wi-Fi 7 with two radios, and the box includes a Wi-Fi 6E USB adapter that plugs into your PC. UploadVR describes it as a direct 6GHz connection between the headset and the dongle, plus a Multi-Link Streaming mode that uses the adapter and your Wi-Fi at the same time and picks the lowest-latency path per packet. The Quest 3 streams through Meta Quest Link over a cable or Air Link, per Meta.

We did not find an independent latency comparison between the two systems, so how they feel in use is not covered here.

Software and standalone play

The Frame runs SteamOS 3. Valve’s developer documentation says it runs Windows games through Proton, x86 games through FEX, and Android games through Lepton, so compatibility varies by game. Valve rates titles on a Great on Frame page, using Verified and Playable ratings. Check that your games are listed before you buy for standalone play.

Half-Life: Alyx is included with the Frame. UploadVR reports a native ARM build that runs without a PC. Gaming on Steam reports that you redeem it in the headset’s settings and cannot redeem a second copy if your account already owns it.

The Quest 3 runs Meta Horizon OS and its own store. Which store carries the games you play is the question that matters, and it is worth checking title by title.

Passthrough

The Quest 3 has color passthrough from 4MP cameras plus a depth sensor, according to Meta. UploadVR and Club386 describe the Frame’s passthrough as monochrome. If you use mixed reality, that is a clear difference in the Quest 3’s favor.

Which one fits

Choose the Steam Frame if your game library is on Steam, you want a dedicated wireless link to a gaming PC, and you accept the higher price and the reservation queue. It has twice the Quest 3’s RAM and a higher refresh ceiling.

Choose the Meta Quest 3 if you want to buy today at $599.99, you use mixed reality, or you mainly play games from Meta’s store.
