Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Fold 7 Camera: What Actually Changed and Why It Matters
The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, announced July 2026, drops the telephoto lens entirely and moves from a 200MP main sensor to a 50MP dual-camera setup. The Fold 7, released July 2025, had a triple-camera system with a 200MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP 3x optical telephoto. This is a significant hardware divergence — not an incremental upgrade.
Camera Hardware: Side by Side
| Fold 7 | Fold 8 (standard) | |
|---|---|---|
| Main sensor | 200MP, f/1.7, 1/1.3” | 50MP, f/1.8, 1/1.56” |
| Ultrawide | 12MP, f/2.2 | 50MP, f/1.9 |
| Telephoto | 10MP, 3x optical (f/2.4) | ❌ None |
| Max optical zoom | 3x | Digital only |
| Selfie (cover + inner) | 10MP, f/2.2 | 10MP, f/2.2 |
The Fold 8’s ultrawide gains significantly in resolution. Everything else is a trade-off: smaller main sensor, no telephoto.
Low-Light Performance
Fold 7 advantage: main sensor size. The 1/1.3-inch, 200MP sensor — even pixel-binned to 12MP — gathers more raw light than the Fold 8’s 1/1.56-inch, 50MP main. Samsung’s Spatio-Temporal Filter on the Fold 7 analyzed pixel data across multiple frames to reduce noise, supported by the ProVisual Engine’s always-on 10-bit HDR+ color.
Fold 8 advantage: ultrawide low-light. The Fold 8’s 50MP ultrawide (f/1.9, quad-pixel autofocus) significantly outperforms the Fold 7’s 12MP ultrawide in low-light wide-angle shots. Samsung also claims improved Nightography algorithms on the Fold 8, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 enables faster multi-frame processing to reduce motion blur in night mode.
Net result for main camera low-light: The Fold 7’s larger sensor has a physical advantage that software can only partially compensate for. For wide-angle low-light shots, the Fold 8 is likely better.
The Telephoto Gap
This is the clearest functional difference. The Fold 7’s 3x optical zoom (67mm equivalent) produces clean, sharp results at distance. The Fold 8 standard model relies entirely on digital cropping — quality degrades noticeably beyond 2x, and in low light, digital zoom at distance is often unusable.
The Fold 8 Ultra addresses this with a 50MP periscope telephoto at 5x optical zoom, which outperforms the Fold 7’s telephoto. But that’s a different device at a different price.
Computational Photography
Both devices use Samsung’s ProVisual Engine. The Fold 8’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 enables faster AI scene detection and image processing — shorter capture windows, less motion blur in night mode. The Fold 7’s engine supported always-on 10-bit HDR+ for video. The Fold 8 Ultra adds Nightography Video; the standard Fold 8 shares some but not all of these enhancements.
Which Camera System Wins
Choose the Fold 7 if you shoot at distance regularly or need consistent low-light main camera performance. The 200MP sensor and 3x optical telephoto are genuinely useful tools that the standard Fold 8 doesn’t replace.
Choose the standard Fold 8 if you rarely zoom and want a better ultrawide camera with a newer processor and faster charging. The telephoto omission won’t matter if you shoot primarily at wide and normal focal lengths.
Choose the Fold 8 Ultra if you want the best camera in the foldable lineup — the 5x periscope telephoto and larger sensor outperform both the Fold 7 and the standard Fold 8.
