The Galaxy Z Fold 8 ships with a 4,800mAh silicon-carbon battery — a meaningful upgrade over the Fold 7’s 4,400mAh cell, and the first time Samsung has used silicon-carbon chemistry in a foldable. Despite the larger capacity, the Fold 8’s dual displays and always-on features can drain power faster than a conventional slab phone. These settings and habits will get the most out of each charge.


Understand What’s Draining Your Battery

Before adjusting settings, it helps to know where power is actually going. On the Fold 8, the inner 7.7-inch display is the single largest drain during active use. The cover screen, while smaller, adds continuous standby consumption when notifications and always-on features are active.

Check battery usage: Settings → Battery → Battery usage shows a breakdown by app and system component over the last 24 hours. If an app is consuming more than expected, that’s the first thing to address.


Display Settings

Inner display brightness and refresh rate are the highest-impact adjustments available.

  • Set adaptive brightness on, but manually cap the maximum brightness level below full — the LTPO panel scales between 1Hz and 120Hz automatically, but only if you have adaptive refresh rate enabled under Settings → Display → Motion smoothness → Adaptive.
  • When using the inner display for reading or static content, consider dropping to 60Hz manually to reduce consumption significantly.
  • Screen timeout: Set to 30 seconds or less under Settings → Display → Screen timeout. The large inner display left on idle is a fast drain.

Cover screen: If you’re not actively using the cover display, disable always-on display for it separately. Go to Settings → Lock screen → Always On Display and set it to “Tap to show” rather than always active.


Power Modes

The Fold 8 runs One UI 7 with three power profiles:

  • Optimized (default) — balanced for general use
  • Medium power saving — limits background activity, reduces display brightness ceiling, disables some always-on features
  • Maximum power saving — restricts to essential apps only, switches to a simplified interface

For a long day without access to a charger, switching to Medium power saving by mid-afternoon typically extends screen-on time by 1.5–2 hours without significantly affecting usability.

Access these at Settings → Battery → Power saving.


App and Background Activity

Sleeping apps: One UI allows you to put infrequently used apps into a deep sleep state, preventing them from running in the background entirely. Go to Settings → Battery → Background usage limits → Sleeping apps and add apps you don’t need running constantly.

Location access: Apps with “Always on” location permission are a consistent background drain. Review under Settings → Location → App permissions and switch any non-essential apps from “Always allow” to “While using the app.”

Sync intervals: If you use multiple email accounts or cloud sync services, stagger their sync intervals or switch from push to manual fetch for accounts you check infrequently.


Charging Habits

The Fold 8 supports 45W wired charging — up from the Fold 7’s 25W — and can reach approximately 67% in 30 minutes on the Fold 8 Ultra (the standard Fold 8 reaches similar speeds with the 45W adapter). Wireless charging tops out at 15W.

To preserve long-term battery health:

  • Enable Protect battery under Settings → Battery → Battery protection, which caps charging at 80% during overnight charging. Samsung’s silicon-carbon chemistry is more stable than conventional graphite anodes, but the 80% cap still meaningfully extends cycle life over months of use.
  • Avoid leaving the phone on a wireless charger for extended periods — wireless charging generates more heat than wired, and sustained heat degrades silicon-carbon cells faster than charge cycles alone.

DeX and Multitasking

Samsung DeX, split-screen, and pop-up windows all increase CPU/GPU load simultaneously. If battery is a concern during a session, limit active windows to two rather than three, and close DeX when not in use — the mode keeps the display at higher brightness and the processor at higher utilization even during idle periods.


Expected Battery Life

With typical mixed use (inner display for productivity, cover screen for quick checks, moderate brightness, adaptive refresh):

  • Standard use: 6–8 hours screen-on time
  • Medium power saving mode: 8–10 hours screen-on time
  • 45W wired charge: 0–100% in approximately 65–70 minutes

These figures will vary based on network conditions, app usage, and display brightness habits.
