Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, 2026. They are not a standard and a premium version of one design. The Fold 8 is a new, wider “passport” shape, while the Fold 8 Ultra is the tall, book-style direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Both run One UI 9 on Android 17 and use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, so the choice comes down to shape, screen size, cameras, and price.

Storage and memory configurations are identical on both phones (256GB, 512GB, and 1TB in the US). Both use silicon-carbon batteries, the first Galaxy phones with that chemistry.

Shape and Screens

The Fold 8 is shorter and wider, so it unfolds into a near-square 4:3 screen that behaves more like a small tablet and reads more like a book held sideways. Its 5.5-inch cover display is also wider than a typical phone screen. The Fold 8 Ultra keeps the familiar tall cover screen, which is 6.5 inches, and opens to a larger 8-inch panel with a higher resolution.

Both phones add Samsung’s Flex Titanium display structure, a metal support layer under the folding panel meant to reduce the visible crease over time. It is a layer under the display, not a titanium frame. Both frames are aluminum.

Cameras

This is the clearest hardware gap. The Fold 8 has two rear cameras, a 50MP main and a 50MP ultrawide, and no telephoto lens. The Fold 8 Ultra has a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. The Ultra’s camera system is the same configuration as the Fold 7’s, with an upgraded ultrawide.

If you often shoot subjects at a distance, the Ultra’s telephoto is the practical reason to pay more. If you mostly shoot wide and normal scenes, the Fold 8’s dual 50MP system covers those shots.

Battery and Charging

The Ultra’s 5,000mAh cell is 200mAh larger than the Fold 8’s 4,800mAh. Samsung lists charging as 45W wired on both, with the Ultra reaching about 67% in 30 minutes under Samsung’s test conditions and the Fold 8 about 63%. Reports on the launch also list 20W wireless charging for the Fold 8, and Engadget describes the Ultra as having the same charging speeds.

One point applies to both: EU energy-label data lists a rating of 1,200 charge cycles to 80% capacity for the Fold 8 line, compared with 2,000 for the Fold 7. Samsung says lifespan is consistent with earlier Galaxy phones, so the two claims do not match.

Durability

YouTube channel JerryRigEverything tested both phones. The Fold 8 survived the reverse-bend test, while the thinner Fold 8 Ultra suffered costly display damage in the same test, according to Notebookcheck. Both phones keep an IP48 rating, which means water resistance but no real dust protection.

Which One to Buy

Choose the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if:

  • You want the lighter phone (201g vs 215g) and a tablet-like 4:3 inner screen
  • You rarely use optical zoom
  • You want to save $200

Choose the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra if:

  • Camera versatility matters, especially the 3x telephoto and 200MP main sensor
  • You prefer the taller, familiar Fold shape with an 8-inch inner screen
  • You want the larger 5,000mAh battery and the thinnest Fold yet
