Elden Ring PC vs Console performance differences explained
FromSoftware’s Elden Ring launched in February 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Console versions — particularly PS5 and Xbox Series X — delivered a relatively stable experience at launch. The PC version did not. This article covers what went wrong on PC, how the community responded, and where performance stands now.
The PC Launch
PC players encountered widespread stuttering on day one, particularly when crossing open-world zones or loading new assets. Digital Foundry traced much of the issue to DirectX 12 and inefficient asset streaming — problems that produced frame time spikes even on high-end hardware. Crashes, unexpected shutdowns, and connection drops during multiplayer compounded the situation.
The result was a PC port that underperformed relative to what its hardware should have produced, drawing criticism from players and reviewers who expected a cleaner release from a AAA title.
Console Performance at Launch
PS5 and Xbox Series X both shipped with a Performance Mode targeting 60fps via dynamic resolution scaling. Digital Foundry’s analysis found the PS5 generally maintained a higher average resolution in this mode. Quality Mode on both consoles targeted 30fps at higher resolutions but dropped in demanding areas. Neither platform suffered the stuttering or crash rates that defined the PC launch, making consoles the more reliable day-one option.
Official Patches and Community Fixes
FromSoftware and Bandai Namco acknowledged the PC issues quickly. Patch 1.02.2 in early March 2022 targeted frame rate stability and several crash-related bugs. Subsequent patches continued refining performance through 2022 and into 2023.
The community moved faster than official patches. Within hours of launch, players released an FPS unlocker that bypassed the 60fps cap, allowing capable hardware — RTX 2080 Super and above — to reach 80–100fps in lighter areas. Ultrawide mods followed shortly after. These tools addressed immediate pain points while official fixes were still in development.
Shadow of the Erdtree (June 2024)
The DLC launched to strong critical reception but brought new PC performance complaints — frame drops in new areas and returning stutters for some players. FromSoftware patched these issues quickly post-launch, but the pattern repeated a familiar cycle: new content, new optimization work required.
Current State
As of 2026, Patch 1.12.1 and subsequent updates have addressed the most widespread PC issues. Occasional stuttering persists for a subset of players on specific hardware configurations, but the severe day-one problems have largely been resolved. The console versions have remained consistent throughout.
For PC players still encountering issues, consulting up-to-date optimization guides — adjusting shader compilation settings, using the FPS unlocker, verifying driver versions — remains the most reliable path to a stable experience.
