The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 are two different answers to the same question, and the price gap is $700. Samsung announced both on July 22, 2026, at Galaxy Unpacked in London, and both went on sale on August 7. The Fold 8 here is Samsung’s new wider design. The original Z Fold line continues as the Fold 8 Ultra, which Samsung’s page says is the continuation of the original Galaxy Z Fold.

Most figures come from Samsung’s Flip 8 page, which also lists the Fold 8, and from Samsung’s Fold 8 page. The Flip 8’s display, charging and camera apertures come from Android Central’s spec sheet. Samsung’s US pages list Snapdragon for both phones, and Android Authority says the Flip 8 gets a Snapdragon chip in some markets, so check your region.

Form factor and screens

The Fold 8 opens into a 7.6-inch 4:3 display, which suits two apps side by side, documents and video. Closed, it is 9.7mm thick, and Samsung lists a 5.5-inch cover screen. The Fold 8’s cover glass is Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 according to Samsung. Android Central notes that the Flip 8 does not have the Titanium Flex display structure found on the Fold 8.

The Flip 8 folds in half and is 180g, which Samsung says is 8 grams lighter than the Flip 7. Its 4.1-inch FlexWindow is the same size as the Flip 7’s, and Android Central says it keeps the 6.9-inch main display too. Samsung lists the Flip 8’s peak brightness at 2,600 nits. The Fold 8’s peak brightness was not confirmed from Samsung’s pages here, so no figure is given for it.

Both phones are rated IP48 and use Armor Aluminum frames. The Flip 8 uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the cover screen.

Camera

Neither phone has a telephoto lens. The Fold 8 pairs a 50MP wide camera with a 50MP ultrawide, and the Flip 8 pairs the same 50MP wide camera with a 12MP ultrawide. Samsung lists up to 10x digital zoom for both and 2x optical-quality zoom on the Flip 8, which it says the Adaptive Pixel sensor enables.

The bigger difference is Flex Mode. Samsung’s Flip 8 page describes FlexCam: stand the phone half-folded, use the cover screen as a preview, and get hands-free shots with Auto Zoom and a palm gesture. Samsung’s Fold 8 page says that phone does not support Flex Mode. If hands-free shooting matters, the Flip 8 is the one built for it.

For camera performance beyond these two, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has a 200MP main camera and up to 30x digital zoom, according to Samsung.

Battery and charging

The Fold 8 has a 4,800mAh battery, and Samsung’s lab test rates video playback at up to 26 hours. The Flip 8 has a 4,300mAh battery and a rating of up to 31 hours. Samsung’s test conditions are specific (720p video, Bluetooth earphones, LTE), so treat these as a comparison between the two phones and not a prediction of daily battery life. No independent battery test of both phones was checked.

Who should buy which

Galaxy Z Fold 8 if you run several apps at once, watch a lot of video on your phone, or want a tablet-sized screen that folds. It costs $700 more and is thicker when closed.

Galaxy Z Flip 8 if you want a flagship phone that fits in a small pocket, care about portability over screen size, and like hands-free selfies and video. It is $100 more than the Flip 7, according to Android Central.
