Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs. Fold 7 Camera Comparison: Low Light Performance
The Galaxy Z Fold 8, announced July 22, 2026, makes a camera trade-off that the Fold 7 didn’t: it drops the telephoto lens entirely on the standard model and replaces the 200MP main sensor with a 50MP dual-camera setup. Whether that’s a problem depends on how you shoot.

The Fold 8’s ultrawide is a significant resolution jump. Everything else is a trade-off.
Low-Light: Main Camera
The Fold 7’s 200MP main sensor has a physical light-gathering advantage: a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor and wider f/1.7 aperture compared to the Fold 8’s 1/1.56-inch sensor at f/1.8. In practice, the Fold 7 captures more raw light per shot with its primary lens. Samsung’s Spatio-Temporal Filter on the Fold 7 stacked pixel data across multiple frames to reduce noise while preserving detail.
The Fold 8’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 enables faster multi-frame processing, which narrows the gap in night mode — shorter capture windows mean less motion blur in low light. But the sensor size difference is a hardware reality that software can only partially compensate for.
Main camera low-light: Fold 7 advantage.
Low-Light: Ultrawide
This flips. The Fold 8’s 50MP ultrawide at f/1.9 with Quad Pixel AF is a substantial upgrade over the Fold 7’s 12MP ultrawide at f/2.2. More pixels, wider aperture, autofocus — all of it matters in dim conditions where the Fold 7’s ultrawide struggles.
Ultrawide low-light: Fold 8 advantage.
The Telephoto Problem
The Fold 7’s 3x optical zoom at 67mm equivalent produces sharp, clean results at distance in any lighting. The Fold 8 standard model has no telephoto — any zoom relies on digital cropping from the 50MP main sensor. At 2x, the crop is usable. Beyond that, and especially in low light, quality degrades quickly.
The Fold 8 Ultra addresses this with a 50MP periscope telephoto at 5x optical zoom, which outperforms the Fold 7’s telephoto. But that’s a separate device.
Which to Choose
Choose the Fold 7 if you regularly shoot at distance or prioritize main camera low-light performance. The 200MP sensor and 3x optical telephoto are real advantages the standard Fold 8 doesn’t match.
Choose the standard Fold 8 if you rarely zoom past 2x and want a better ultrawide, faster charging (45W vs 25W), and a newer processor.
Choose the Fold 8 Ultra if camera versatility is the priority — the 5x periscope telephoto and larger main sensor outperform both.
