The Galaxy Z Fold 8 shipped August 7, 2026, running Android 17 with One UI 9. The setup process has more moving parts than a standard slab phone — two displays, a hinge, DeX, cover screen apps, and Samsung’s ecosystem layer on top of Google’s. These are the five things worth doing first.
1. Accounts and Software Updates
Sign into your Google account during initial setup to restore apps, contacts, and Play Store access. Then sign into your Samsung account separately — this unlocks Samsung Pay, Galaxy Store, and Samsung Cloud backup, which is the only reliable way to restore Samsung Health data if you switch devices later.
Before doing anything else, check for software updates: Settings → Software update → Download and install. One UI 9 shipped with day-one patches on the Fold 8; running on launch firmware means missing fixes that were ready before the phone left the factory.
2. Biometrics and Secure Folder
The Fold 8’s fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button on the right side — register it under Settings → Security and privacy → Biometrics → Fingerprint. Add your face as a secondary unlock method if you want faster recognition in well-lit conditions.
Set up Secure Folder while you’re in security settings. It creates an encrypted, isolated space on the device — separate app instances, separate files, separate account logins. Anything you don’t want appearing in your main app drawer or gallery belongs here.
3. Data Migration via Smart Switch
If you’re coming from another phone, run Samsung Smart Switch before setting up your apps manually. It handles contacts, messages, photos, app list, and some app data over Wi-Fi or USB-C cable. Find it under Settings → Accounts and backup → Bring data from old device.
Smart Switch works with both Android and iOS sources. For large transfers, wired is faster and more reliable than wireless.
4. Cover Screen and App Continuity
The Fold 8 natively supports 16 apps on the cover screen — 12 Samsung system apps plus Google Maps, Google Messages, Netflix, and YouTube under Labs. To add more, install Good Lock from the Galaxy Store, then add the MultiStar module and use the Launcher Widget to put any app on the cover display.
App continuity — where an app moves from cover screen to inner display when you unfold — works automatically for most apps. Test it with whatever you use most. If an app doesn’t transition cleanly, check Settings → Advanced features → Labs for continuity options.
5. Display and Battery Settings
The inner display’s LTPO panel scales between 1Hz and 120Hz. Make sure adaptive refresh is on: Settings → Display → Motion smoothness → Adaptive. Fixed 60Hz saves battery but defeats the purpose of LTPO.
Enable Protect Battery under Settings → Battery → Battery protection. This caps charging at 85% during overnight charges and meaningfully extends cycle life over months of use — the silicon-carbon chemistry in the Fold 8 is more stable than previous generations, but the 85% cap still helps long-term.
Set screen timeout to 30 seconds or less on both displays. The inner display left on idle drains the 4,800mAh battery faster than active use at moderate brightness.
