Turn off the Start music automatically toggle in Android Auto’s settings. If music still starts afterward, you are not alone: users report the toggle failing, and Spotify’s own staff say the behavior can depend on the phone and the car’s Bluetooth connection rather than on any Spotify setting.

Turn off “Start music automatically”

The toggle’s description, as quoted in a Spotify Community thread, reads “Automatically start media when you start driving.” Android Central says that after you switch it off, your music will be paused the next time you connect.

The route to the toggle differs by source, so use whichever matches your phone:

Source Route
Android Central Settings, search for Android Auto, then the Start-up sub-menu
Symfonium support reply Android Auto app, Settings gear, then Startup. On some versions the toggle is labeled “Resume media playback”
Guiding Tech Settings, Connected devices, Connection preferences, Android Auto
Spotify Community users Android Auto, General. Another user: Settings, Connections, Android Auto

The section name and the menu path vary by phone brand and software version. Searching for “Android Auto” in Settings is the quickest way to reach it.

If the music still starts

The reports are consistent. Users in the Spotify Community thread say the toggle was already off and music started anyway. Posts there continue into September and December 2025. Under Guiding Tech’s guide, Android users from 2023 describe the same result. One of them also turned on a “Don’t allow other apps to control” option in their music app, and it did not help.

What the sources say about why:

  • Your phone may not be using Android Auto at all. One user in the Spotify thread found their toggle was already off, then realized they connect to the car over plain Bluetooth because the car lacks a compatible USB port. Spotify’s staff reply in the same thread says the behavior depends on multiple factors involving Android devices and Bluetooth, rather than a setting in the Spotify app. If your car connects as a Bluetooth audio device, Android Auto’s toggle may not apply to that connection.
  • The music app receives a play command. A Symfonium support reply says an app that receives a play command plays it and cannot tell the command came from Android Auto. In that thread the poster had the toggle off and said it had no effect. The reply suggested taking it up with Google.

What Spotify’s staff suggested:

  • On some phones, switch off Autostart in the Spotify app’s settings. They note this option is not available on all phones.
  • Check for firmware updates for your phone and your car’s stereo, and contact the manufacturer if that does not help.
  • They also linked a third-party article. One user says it recommends a paid app (Tasker). That article was not checked here.

Workarounds that users report, none confirmed by Google or Spotify:

  • One user says removing the music app from Android Auto’s list of apps stopped the autostart, at the cost of controlling audio from the phone. Android Central describes the Customize Launcher screen in Android Auto’s settings where you uncheck apps.
  • One user says stopping Spotify from playing in the background fixed it. A later poster in the same thread says that did nothing for them.

No Google help page naming this toggle turned up in the searches done for this article (October 15, 2026).

Order to try

  1. Switch off Start music automatically and reconnect.
  2. Check how your phone connects. If it is plain Bluetooth, the Android Auto toggle may not be the control that matters.
  3. Look for an Autostart setting for your music app, and install phone and car-stereo updates.
  4. As a last resort, remove the music app from Android Auto’s launcher.
