Gemini in Android Auto: What It Does and How to Turn It On
Gemini has replaced Google Assistant in Android Auto. Google started a global rollout on November 20, 2025, in 45 languages, beginning with people who had already switched to Gemini on their phone. You still say “Hey Google,” but Gemini answers.
Checked October 8, 2026. The rollout was staged and server-side, so what you see depends on your account and app version.
What changed
- Same ways to start it. According to TechCrunch, you say “Hey Google” and then tap the mic button on the car screen, or long-press the voice control button on the steering wheel.
- Conversations, not just commands. Saying “Hey Google, let’s chat” starts a free-flowing conversation, and “let’s talk live” opens Gemini Live. Google says this lets you brainstorm or learn something new on the drive.
- More apps. At launch Gemini worked with Gmail, Google Calendar, Tasks, and Keep, plus Samsung’s calendar, reminders, and notes. Google said support for more third-party apps is planned.
- Messages in other languages. Reports on the rollout describe automatic translation of incoming and outgoing messages.
- Maps requests. Ford Authority’s coverage gives examples such as asking Gemini to add a stop based on what you are craving, or to send someone your ETA.
Google’s support page for Android Auto said that Google Assistant would remain available until March 2026, according to TechRepublic.
What got worse or went missing
9to5Google noted that one feature lost in the switch is the ability to use nicknames for contacts. Early reports from users also described Gemini struggling with simple commands like “call Mom,” which Google Assistant handled without trouble. Treat that as early feedback rather than a guarantee, since Gemini keeps changing.
How to get Gemini in your car
- Switch your phone to Gemini. The rollout began with people who had already moved from Google Assistant to Gemini on their phone.
- Update the apps. In Google Play, update Android Auto, Google Play Services, and the Google app.
- Connect to the car and say “Hey Google.” Recent coverage says a new Gemini section appears in Android Auto’s settings once it is active.
If you don’t see it, check that your phone is on Gemini first. Google called the rollout server-side and staged it “over the coming months,” so for some accounts the only fix was waiting.
Prompts worth trying
- Ask it to add a specific kind of stop on your route
- Ask it to summarize your recent emails
- Say “let’s chat” to brainstorm ideas on a long drive
Everything is meant to work hands-free, so it is built around voice rather than the touch screen.
Takeaway
If your phone is already on Gemini and Android Auto is up to date, Gemini probably has replaced Assistant in your car or will soon. If it hasn’t, check the phone first, then update the apps, and give the staged rollout time. Don’t expect every Assistant habit, such as contact nicknames, to carry over.
