Google began removing Google Assistant from Android phones on September 4, 2026, and by late September reports said the change was reaching users broadly. Once Assistant is removed from a device, Google’s email says you can no longer use it or switch back. This article covers what changed, what is not affected, and what to re-test now that Gemini is the assistant on your phone.

Checked October 16, 2026 against press reports. Google’s own help page was not available for this article, and nothing here was tested on a phone.

What happened

  • Early August: Google emailed Assistant users, as 9to5Google first reported, to say Assistant was being discontinued on mobile.
  • September 4: removal began. The rollout takes a few weeks, so devices lose Assistant on different days, according to Memeburn.
  • September 28: 9to5Google reported that the change looked widely rolled out. Remio’s summary says that by then the migration appeared much more widespread, and that on supported phones Gemini is becoming Google’s only offered assistant.

The original plan was to finish the transition in 2025. The Decoder reports it was pushed to 2026, and AI Weekly says Gemini initially struggled with simple device commands, which is why Google delayed it.

What is covered, and what is not

The removal covers Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and Android Auto when it is projected from a phone.

Not covered, per Inc and Memeburn:

  • Cars with Google built-in keep Assistant beyond September 4.
  • Google Home speakers, smart displays and Google TV are on separate schedules. Inc says Google is replacing Assistant on speakers and displays through Gemini for Home.
  • Implicator reports that phones and tablets below Gemini’s minimum system requirements, and devices in regions where Gemini is unavailable, keep Assistant for now.

What to re-test

Gemini supports calls, messages, routines, navigation and many device controls, according to Inc, but some services and actions remain unavailable or work differently. Memeburn names the things worth checking one by one: routines, reminders, Interpreter Mode and media controls. AI Weekly adds that the August reporting had no detail on whether routines migrate automatically, which Wear OS models get full Gemini support, or when Home and TV platforms follow.

A practical order for checking your phone:

  1. Routines and reminders. Open each one you rely on and run it by voice.
  2. Smart home commands. Try the lights, climate and media devices you actually use.
  3. Media control. Test the music or podcast app you use most.
  4. Wear OS and headphones. Both switch with the phone, so try your usual watch and earbud commands.
  5. Android Auto. Try navigation, calls and messages through the car display.

Assistant versus Gemini on reliability

The Decoder describes the underlying difference as a deterministic, rules-based assistant being replaced by a probability-based large language model. It calls the open question whether Gemini can match the reliability of its predecessor for simple everyday commands. Implicator says reporters and users have documented Gemini failures on basic voice tasks, and Remio frames reliability as the test now.

This article does not rank the two on speed or accuracy, because no independent test was checked. If a simple command that worked before now fails, report it to Google and use the phone’s touch controls for that task in the meantime.

Who will notice the change most

People who use voice for timers, calls, smart home control and media are the ones most likely to notice differences, since those are the commands Assistant handled the same way every time. People who mainly ask open-ended questions will see the least change. Either way, the practical step is the same: run your five or six most-used commands once and see which ones need a different phrasing.
